API Turtle Fix

TurtleAll-natural

API Turtle Fix brings the all-natural approach of the API fish remedies to aquatic and semi-aquatic reptiles and amphibians. It treats topical bacterial infections on the body and limbs of aquatic turtles, newts and aquatic frogs, and it works rapidly on open wounds and damaged tissue, the kind of injury that fungus takes hold in if it is left. Add 1 ml for every 7.6 litres of water, or a teaspoon per 38 litres, once a day for seven days, then change 25% of the water. The 118 ml bottle is available in South Africa through Jungle Aquatics.

Dose by the water volume in the tank, which in a turtle set-up is usually well below the tank's full capacity.

How much Turtle Fix do I add, and for how long?

Add 1 ml for every 7.6 litres of water, which is a teaspoon (5 ml) per 38 litres, once a day for seven days. After the seventh dose, change 25% of the water. Measure the water that is actually in the tank rather than the tank size, because most turtle tanks are only part-filled below the basking area; a set-up holding 60 litres needs about 8 ml a day. Remove activated carbon from the filter before the first dose. One 118 ml bottle is enough for a complete course on roughly 125 litres of water.

Treats bacterial infections on skin and limbs

Turtles pick up scrapes from rough rocks and basking platforms and bites from tank mates, and in a warm tank those can turn into bacterial infections. Turtle Fix is dosed into the water rather than applied by hand, so it reaches the body and limbs of the animal whenever it is swimming and keeps working across the full seven days.

Repairs wounds before fungus moves in

An open wound on a turtle is an invitation to fungus, which grows on damaged tissue. Turtle Fix is designed to repair that tissue rapidly, closing the wound and leaving nothing for fungus to colonise. It is suitable for aquatic turtles, newts and aquatic frogs, and the dose is the same for all of them.

A simple seven-day course

Add 1 ml per 7.6 litres of water, or one teaspoon (5 ml) per 38 litres, once a day for seven days, then change 25% of the water. Work from the volume of water actually in the tank, since turtle set-ups are often only part-filled. Take activated carbon out of the filter for the week, because carbon adsorbs the remedy.

Frequently asked questions

Which animals can I treat with Turtle Fix?

Aquatic turtles, newts and aquatic frogs, for bacterial infections on the skin, body and limbs and for open wounds. It is formulated for animals that live in or around water, so it is not the product for tortoises or other dry-land reptiles.

Does Turtle Fix treat shell rot?

Turtle Fix is labelled for bacterial infections of the skin and limbs and for open wounds; shell problems are not on the label. If the shell itself looks damaged or the animal is off its food, see a reptile vet, and the Jungle Aquatics team can also help you work out what you are looking at.

How quickly does Turtle Fix work?

It acts rapidly on damaged tissue, but complete the seven daily doses and the 25% water change regardless of how quickly a wound looks better. If a wound is deep, spreading or not improving by the end of the course, a reptile vet should see the animal.

Do I remove the carbon from my turtle filter during treatment?

Yes. Turtle canister and hang-on filters usually run activated carbon, and carbon adsorbs the remedy before it can work, so take it out for the seven days and refit fresh carbon after the final water change.

Is API Turtle Fix available in South Africa?

Yes. Jungle Aquatics in Fourways, Johannesburg stocks the 118 ml bottle and delivers throughout South Africa; check jungleaquatics.com for live pricing and stock.
