API Filter Media & Cleaning

A filter is only as good as what sits inside it. API chemical media pull ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, odour and discolouration straight out of the water column, several of them rechargeable in salt solution, while Bio-Chem Stars give nitrifying bacteria somewhere permanent to live. The glass tools finish the job on the side of the tank you actually look through.

API Bio-Chem Zorb

A resin-and-carbon filter pouch that pulls colour, odour, heavy metals and toxic gases out of the water — crystal-clear water in freshwater, marine and reef tanks. Treats up to 210 litres.

Frequently asked questions

Which API media should I use instead of activated carbon?

Bio-Chem Zorb. It does what carbon does — removes odour, yellowing and dissolved organics — and its resin blend also takes out heavy metals and toxic gases. Pair it with Nitra-Zorb when ammonia or nitrate is the problem, and keep Super Activated Carbon for clearing medication after a course of treatment.

How do I recharge Nitra-Zorb or the Water Softener Pillow?

Soak the pouch in a strong solution of aquarium salt and water for the time given on the pack, rinse, and it is ready to go back in the filter. Each pouch can be recharged several times before it needs replacing.

Will Phos-Zorb harm my live plants?

It lowers phosphate, which plants use in small amounts, so in a heavily planted tank use it only when phosphate is measurably high or algae is taking hold. In fish-only and marine tanks it can run permanently.

Can I use the API Algae Scraper on an acrylic tank?

No. The pad is made for glass and will scratch acrylic. Use a dedicated acrylic-safe pad on acrylic aquariums.

Are API filter media available in South Africa?

Yes. Jungle Aquatics in Fourways, Johannesburg stocks the API media and cleaning range and delivers nationwide; live pricing and stock are on jungleaquatics.com.
