API Freshwater Master Test Kit

Liquid testFreshwater800 tests

The API Freshwater Master Test Kit is the standard against which aquarium test kits are measured. It reads the five values that decide whether a freshwater tank is safe — pH, high-range pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate — using liquid reagents and glass test tubes rather than paper strips, so the colours are strong, repeatable and easy to match against the printed chart. The box holds seven reagent bottles, four tubes with snap caps, a storage tub and a booklet that explains what each reading means and how to correct it. With 800 tests inside, it covers years of weekly checks on a home aquarium.

Shake the nitrate reagent bottles hard and for the full time stated — it is the test most often read low because the reagent was not mixed.

Which numbers matter most?

In a cycled freshwater tank you are looking for ammonia 0 ppm, nitrite 0 ppm and nitrate below 40 ppm — ideally under 20 ppm in a planted or heavily stocked tank. Any ammonia or nitrite at all means the biological filter is not keeping up: change water, feed less and add Quick Start. Nitrate creeps up between water changes and is the number that tells you when the next one is due. pH should simply be stable and in the range your fish come from — most community fish are happy between 6.5 and 7.5 — and a sudden shift matters more than the exact figure. Test a new tank every day or two for the first month, then weekly.

Reads the five numbers that keep fish alive

Ammonia and nitrite are the two poisons of a new or overloaded tank; nitrate tracks how much waste has accumulated; pH tells you whether the water suits the fish. The master kit tests all of them, with a separate high-range pH test for cichlid and hard-water tanks. One weekly session with the kit catches problems days before a fish shows them.

Liquid reagents in glass tubes

Each test is a measured 5 ml of tank water in a glass tube, a counted number of drops, a shake and a wait. Liquid chemistry produces a full-strength colour that is far easier to read than a damp strip, and the glass tubes rinse clean and last for years. Four tubes let you run the whole panel at once.

Eight hundred tests in one box

The seven bottles are sized for 800 tests in total. Testing ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH weekly uses around 200 tests a year, so a single kit typically lasts three to four years on one tank — and considerably longer once a mature tank only needs a fortnightly check.

Tells you what to do about the result

The booklet pairs each colour chart with the safe range and the correction: a water change and Ammo Lock for ammonia, Quick Start for a stalled cycle, a larger water change for high nitrate, pH Up or Down or a Proper pH buffer for the wrong pH. The kit is diagnosis and prescription in one tub.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the Freshwater Master Test Kit on a saltwater tank?

It is calibrated for freshwater. For marine tanks use the Saltwater Master Test Kit, which uses the high-range pH test and colour charts for saltwater.

How many tests are in the kit?

About 800 in total across the five tests. Weekly testing of a single tank uses roughly 200 a year, so a kit lasts several years.

Why does my nitrate test read zero when the tank is obviously dirty?

Almost always because the second nitrate reagent was not shaken hard enough or long enough. Shake the bottle vigorously for the full time in the instructions, then the tube for a full minute, and wait five minutes before reading.

Do the reagents expire?

Yes — each bottle carries a lot number and the reagents lose accuracy after a few years. Store the kit out of sunlight and heat, and replace bottles that are past date or give inconsistent colours.

Is the Freshwater Master Test Kit accurate enough for a planted or shrimp tank?

Yes. Liquid reagent tests are the more precise format, and the kit reads ammonia and nitrite at the low levels that matter for sensitive shrimp. Add the GH & KH kit if you keep soft-water species.

Is the API Freshwater Master Test Kit available in South Africa?

Yes — it is one of the most-asked-for products at Jungle Aquatics in Fourways, Johannesburg, which ships it anywhere in the country; live pricing and stock are on jungleaquatics.com.
