API Goldfish Protect

GoldfishDetoxifies ammonia

API Goldfish Protect is a tap water conditioner tuned to the one thing goldfish do more than any other aquarium fish: produce ammonia. It removes chlorine and chloramine from new water, detoxifies the ammonia released by the fish between water changes, and adds trace minerals that support a healthier tank. The dose is 5 ml for every 7.5 litres, and the 118 ml bottle treats 178 litres. Use it with every water change — weekly partial changes of 25% for a filtered tank, and far larger ones for an unfiltered bowl.

How much water should I change in a goldfish tank?

More than for most fish. The pack recommends a 25% partial change every week for a filtered goldfish aquarium and an 80% weekly change for an unfiltered bowl, because goldfish foul water quickly. Condition the new water with Goldfish Protect at 5 ml per 7.5 litres — a 30-litre tank with a 25% change needs 5 ml for the 7.5 litres you replace. If an ammonia test reads above zero between changes, dose the whole tank at the same rate; the 118 ml bottle treats 178 litres in total.

Ammonia cover for heavy feeders

Goldfish are greedy, messy and produce ammonia faster than most filters in a small tank can process it. Goldfish Protect detoxifies that ammonia so the fish are not breathing it in the days between water changes. The pack directions add that it should also be dosed whenever a water test shows ammonia present.

Safe tap water plus trace minerals

Like every API conditioner it removes chlorine and chloramine on contact. It also returns trace minerals that goldfish use and that frequent water changes strip out, which is useful in the soft water many South African towns supply.

Dosing and the weekly change

Use the cap: 1 ml per 1.9 litres or 5 ml per 7.5 litres. The pack recommends a weekly partial water change of 25% to keep a goldfish aquarium healthy, and an 80% weekly change for an unfiltered environment — a goldfish bowl without a filter needs far more new water than most people expect.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Goldfish Protect in a pond?

It is formulated and dosed for goldfish aquariums and bowls. For a pond, use the API Pond range, which is dosed per thousands of litres.

Do I need a separate ammonia remover?

Not for routine use — Goldfish Protect detoxifies ammonia as part of its job. For a serious spike in a larger tank, Ammo Lock is the stronger tool.

Is it safe for other fish kept with goldfish?

Yes. It is a water conditioner and is safe for the tank mates commonly kept with goldfish, such as white cloud minnows and weather loaches.

Is API Goldfish Protect available in South Africa?

Yes — Jungle Aquatics in Fourways, Johannesburg stocks the 118 ml bottle and delivers nationwide; live pricing and stock are on jungleaquatics.com.
