API Pond Chlorine & Heavy Metal Neutraliser

PondChloramine

API Pond Chlorine & Heavy Metal Neutraliser is the concentrated conditioner for filling and topping up a pond. It neutralises chlorine on contact along with the copper, lead, zinc and other heavy metals that are toxic to fish and plants, and at a slightly higher dose it deals with chloramine, which does not gas off on its own. Dose 10 ml for every 378 litres for chlorine and metals, or 15 ml per 341 litres where the supply is chloraminated. It comes in 473 ml and 946 ml bottles, and is used when filling a new pond and whenever water is added or changed.

Chlorine or chloramine — which dose do I use?

If your supply is chlorinated, dose 10 ml per 378 litres (or 120 ml per 4 542 litres for a big pond). If it is treated with chloramine, use the higher rate of 15 ml per 341 litres — chloramine is a stable chlorine-ammonia compound that neither standing nor aeration removes, and under-dosing leaves chlorine in the water. Many South African municipalities have moved to chloramine, and few gardeners know which they get, so when in doubt use the chloramine rate: the extra product is far cheaper than a gill-burned koi. Dose into the flow near the pump or waterfall so it disperses quickly.

Two doses for two kinds of tap water

Where the municipality uses chlorine, 10 ml treats 378 litres; where it uses chloramine — increasingly common — the label calls for 15 ml per 341 litres, because breaking the chloramine bond takes more product. If you are not sure which your town uses, dose at the chloramine rate.

Heavy metals as well as chlorine

Copper, lead and zinc reach a pond from municipal supply, old plumbing and sometimes from run-off. They are toxic to fish and plants at low concentrations and do not evaporate. The neutraliser detoxifies them at the same time as the chlorine.

Concentrated for big volumes

Ponds are measured in thousands of litres, so a conditioner needs to be strong. At the standard rate, 120 ml treats 4 542 litres — the 946 ml bottle handles a large pond several times over. Use the dosing cap rather than pouring.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from Pond Stress Coat?

Both make tap water safe. This one is the concentrated neutraliser and explicitly covers chloramine and heavy metals; Pond Stress Coat adds aloe vera to protect and heal fish skin. Many pond keepers use this for routine top-ups and Stress Coat when adding or handling fish.

Do I need it for a small top-up?

Yes. Even a few hundred litres of untreated tap water carries enough chlorine to irritate fish and set back the filter bacteria. Dose for the volume you are adding.

Does it remove ammonia?

It neutralises chloramine, which contains ammonia, but it is not an ammonia detoxifier. For an ammonia reading in the pond, use API Pond Ammo-Lock.

Is it safe for pond plants?

Yes. It is made for ponds containing fish and aquatic plants, and it removes the metals that harm both.

Is API Pond Chlorine & Heavy Metal Neutraliser available in South Africa?

Yes — Jungle Aquatics in Fourways, Johannesburg stocks the 473 ml and 946 ml bottles and delivers nationwide; live pricing and stock are on jungleaquatics.com.
