API Accu-Clear

FreshwaterPlant safe

API Accu-Clear is a flocculant for freshwater aquariums: it makes the microscopic particles that turn water grey or green stick together into clumps large enough for the filter to catch or for you to siphon from the bottom. One millilitre treats 40 litres and the water usually clears within a few hours. It is safe with all freshwater fish and plants, can be used weekly as a routine polish, and comes in 118 ml and 237 ml bottles — a little goes a long way, with the smaller bottle treating 4 484 litres. It is not for marine tanks, where the high mineral content stops it working.

Why is my water still cloudy after dosing?

Give it time and filtration first: Accu-Clear clumps the particles, but the filter still has to trap them, so keep it running and rinse the sponge the next day. If the water is no clearer after 24 hours, dose once more at 1 ml per 40 litres — and then stop, because further doses make cloudiness worse. Haze that returns within days is usually a bacterial bloom in a new tank or the result of overfeeding; Accu-Clear clears the symptom, but the cure is a 25% water change, lighter feeding and patience while the tank matures. Green water is algae and needs less light and fewer nutrients as well.

Clears the water in hours, not days

Cloudiness is usually millions of particles too fine for a filter sponge to hold. Accu-Clear binds them into heavier clumps that the filter traps or that settle where a gravel vacuum can remove them. Dose 1 ml per 40 litres, keep the filter running, and expect visibly clearer water within a few hours.

One dose, then wait 24 hours

If the water is still hazy after a day, a second dose is allowed after 24 hours — but not a third. Over-dosing a flocculant makes cloudiness worse, not better. If the haze keeps returning, a 25% water change and a look at the cause (overfeeding, a bacterial bloom, disturbed substrate) will do more than another dose.

Freshwater only, plants welcome

Accu-Clear is safe with all freshwater fish and live plants, and a low level of aquarium salt in a freshwater tank does not interfere with it. In marine water, though, the minerals prevent it from clumping particles and can make the cloudiness worse, so keep it out of saltwater systems.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Accu-Clear in a saltwater aquarium?

No. In water with a high mineral content it will not clear the cloudiness and may make it worse, although it does no harm to marine fish or plants.

Is it safe with fish and live plants?

Yes. Accu-Clear is safe with all freshwater fish and plants at the label dose.

How often can I dose it?

Once, then a second dose after 24 hours if needed, and no more than that for a single clouding episode. As routine maintenance it can be dosed once a week.

Will it clear a bacterial bloom?

It will help clear the haze, but bacterial blooms come back quickly unless the cause — usually excess organics in a new or overfed tank — is dealt with.

Is API Accu-Clear available in South Africa?
