API Pond 5 in 1 Test Strips

PondDip strips

API Pond 5 in 1 Test Strips are the quickest way to keep an eye on a pond. One strip dipped straight into the water reads pH, nitrite, nitrate, carbonate hardness and general hardness against a precise colour chart — no sample bottle, no test vial, no walking back to the kitchen. The snap-cap tube keeps the unused strips dry, which is what preserves their accuracy over a season. Twenty-five strips to a tube. Pair them with the Pond Master Test Kit, which covers ammonia and phosphate and gives the precision of liquid reagents when something looks wrong.

What should a healthy pond read?

Aim for nitrite 0 ppm — anything above zero means the filter is not coping — and nitrate low enough that algae is not being fed, which in practice means the lower the better and a rising trend is worth acting on. Keep pH between 7.0 and 8.5 for koi and goldfish, and hold KH high enough that the pH does not move after heavy rain: a pond with almost no carbonate hardness can swing dangerously overnight. GH simply tells you whether the water is hard or soft. Test weekly through the warm months, and confirm anything odd with the liquid Pond Master Test Kit, which also covers ammonia and phosphate.

Test at the pond, not the kitchen sink

No vial to fill and carry: dip the strip in the pond, hold it flat and read it against the chart. That convenience is the difference between testing weekly and testing when there is already a problem.

Hardness, which most pond keepers never check

Carbonate hardness is what stops a pond’s pH crashing after heavy rain, and general hardness matters to fish and plants. The strips read both at a glance, alongside pH, nitrite and nitrate.

Keep them dry

Strips read wrongly once damp air gets to the pads, so the tube snaps shut and should be closed immediately after taking one out. Stored properly the remaining strips keep their accuracy for the rest of the season.

Frequently asked questions

Do the Pond 5 in 1 strips test ammonia?

No. They read pH, nitrite, nitrate, KH and GH. For ammonia and phosphate, use the API Pond Master Test Kit.

Do I need a test tube or sample container?

No. The strip is dipped directly into the pond, which is what makes it quick enough to do every week.

How many strips are in a tube?

Twenty-five, in a snap-cap container that keeps the unused strips dry and stable.

How often should I test a pond?

Weekly through the warm season, and more often in spring or after adding fish, treating algae or a heavy rain.

Are API Pond 5 in 1 Test Strips available in South Africa?

Yes — Jungle Aquatics in Fourways, Johannesburg stocks them and delivers nationwide; live pricing and stock are on jungleaquatics.com.
